Founded in 1622 by Philip III and Margaret of Austria, the convent contains a valuable collection of 17th and 18th century paintings and sculptures which includes works by Lucas Jordán, Juan der Hammer and Gregorio Fernández. The reliquary houses a collection of 700 pieces of great artistic importance which come from numerous European countries. An enclosed religious community still lives in the monastery.
